Going Natural

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

By Elaine, AICI CIM

A recent article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram's Panache Magazine called "Going Natural" really hit home with me. FINALLY, hair stylists in Fort Worth are realizing what I have known for many years - women need to go with their natural hair color and texture. Until your hair starts turning grey, enjoy your natural hair color. When a woman tells me that her hair is a mousey color, most likely, the problem is that she is wearing the wrong colors of makeup and clothing. Nature doesn't make mistakes - everyone is born beautiful. When we start messing with what nature gave us, our appearance suffers.

The same goes for texture. If you have naturally curly hair, using the correct products and wearing your hair curly will make life easier and less time consuming. If your hair is naturally straight, select a great hair style for straight hair. There is always a fashionable hair style for everyone. Quit fighting with your hair, get out of your comfort zone, and try a new style!

It will take a couple of weeks for your eyes to adjust to a new hair color and style, but I guarantee that you will receive many compliments. If you want an unbiased opinion, ask a Stoltz Image personal stylist/consultant to recommend the perfect hair color and style for you during a half-hour consult.

It Takes a Village

Each morning, I drag myself out of bed and prepare for the "getting ready" process.  Most days, I can keep it around an hour (which I feel is a fairly reasonable amount of time). Some days I am a bit slower and push the hour and a half mark.  But even on the days that I am running late, I never skip a getting dressed step. I know that some women might consider my getting dressed ritual too long of a routine, I don't mind it because I know how much better I look after I have washed the sleep off of my face and concealed my bags with some makeup (not to mention curl my hair into an actual style instead of a frizz bomb.)

As a personal stylist, however, one of the most frequent questions I get is, "How can I do less steps in the morning and still look like a million bucks?" The answer is simple: you can't. Let me put it this way, leaving out a step most likely just looks like your left out a step.  There isn't a short cut to looking fabulous. You have to put in the time.

Most people want to know how they can cut out some makeup steps. I remind them that the basic makeup steps (concealer, foundation, powder, blush, lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara, and brows) have been around for ages, and there is a reason. Those steps make a big difference. If they didn't, Stoltz Image Cosmetics wouldn't be such a huge success.

People also want to know about hair? Isn't there a five minute hair style? Maybe, but most likely it looks like a five minute hair style.  If you are lucky enough to wake up with super straight or super curly hair, then you may be able to fluff your hair and go, but, most of us need to blow dry our hair straight, use a straightening iron, or visit our curling iron. I have to blow dry and then spend about 10 to 15 minutes curling. I know that if I don't spend some quality time on my hair, then I feel disheveled all day long. And I want to look like I stepped out of a magazine every time that I walk out the front door. What woman doesn't?

So, as I tell my husband while he patiently waits for me to get dressed, "It takes a village to keep me looking like this." And, I know that he really doesn't mind waiting on me because the difference in 30 minutes of getting ready time and an hour, takes me from presentable to fabulous!

Now I'm not saying that you need to spend three hours getting perfectly polished each morning, but the next time that you are tempted to skip an important step, just think about the difference it will make in how you look and feel all day long. Spend some quality time on yourself each morning so that you will look and feel like a million bucks.  I promise, people will notice!

Can Curvy Girls Wear Skinny Jeans?

I learned a hard lesson the other day: Don't ask a man his opinion if you don't want it. Have you ever asked your husband/significant other what he thinks of your appearance or outfit? I did, and here is my story:

I love skinny jeans (reference the picture on the right for a clarification).  Love Thumbnail image for Skinny Jean.jpghow they look, love that they are a big trend right now, and I really want to wear them. Now I know better than most that not every trend is for every person, but I was hoping to get away with this one. FYI, I'm curvy, and that description alone will tell you that I am going to have some trouble with the skinny jean. But, I bought a pair anyway just to see if I could pull it off.

I brought my new skinny jeans home and tried them on for my husband. Many men actually have a great sense for clothing shapes. They understand when an outfit is enhancing a woman's natural assets, and when it doesn't. My husband is one of these men, and I really respect his opinion on fashion. So, when I asked him what he honestly thought about me and my skinny jeans, he was totally honest. He said, "You look like a figure eight on sticks."

I was a bit crushed, but I knew that it was coming. Needless to say, skinny jeans really aren't my best option when it comes to trends this season. But, curvy girls can wear skinny jeans if they are paired with a long top or tunic. As long as our top falls well past our curves, we can rock a great pair of skinnies, just like the straight girls.

Do you get sentimental about your old clothes? I do, and my sentiment is what keeps my guest closet filled with my clothing collection. I see the importance of ridding my regular closet of clothing that I don't currently wear, but sometimes I just can't bear to part with an item. Then, I try to find a home for it in my clothing collection.

But, what is the difference between a piece of clothing that should become part of your clothing collection, and one that is destined for the wastebasket? As you discard clothing from your closet, follow these simple rules so that you will always be able to tell the difference between trash and treasure. An item is destined for your clothing collection if:

1) It is sentimental to you and of good quality. You may wish to save these items and one day show them off to your friends and family (Exp. your wedding dress, or an outfit that marked a special occasion in your life).

2) It can be reused as a costume. Save these items for your next Halloween party or for when your children play dress up. (Hint: Bridesmaid dresses make fabulous costume pieces.)

3) It doesn't currently fit, but it is a high quality piece and a staple. These items may be worn in the future if you can fit back into them. You don't have to worry as much about a staple going out of style as quickly as an accent piece. Therefore, keep staples that don't fit in your clothing collection, and reevaluate them each year to see if you fit into them or if they need to be discarded because of becoming dated.

4) Accessories that are not currently in style. Never throw your accessories away. They only take up a small space, so save them in case they come back in style. Clothing very rarely comes back in style in the same way (Exp. The wide leg pant of today doesn't quite look like the bell bottoms of the 70's.), but a dated accessory may pass as a current piece in the future.

If you are left with any items that do not fit into one of these requirements for being added to your clothing collection and don't fit into your current wardrobe, please discard them. By doing so, you will make more space in your house and in your life to enjoy your current wardrobe and your clothing collection.

Stoltz Image Girls.jpgTo get you inspired to clean out your closet and fine tune your clothing collection, here is a picture of the Stoltz Image girls (Left to Right: me, Shelbi Elfert, and Katie Passmore) playing dress up in some of the clothes that don't make the cut in our regular closets.

Remember that fashion should be fun, and using your clothing collection for an impromptu fashion show/dress up party will remind you of the places you have been and the clothing that took you there.

My Feet Never Make Me Feel Fat

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

What is it with women and shoes?  They just seem to call to us like chocolate to a chocolate addict. (Actually, come to think about it, shoes lovers often are the chocolate addicts.) But, what is our obsession with adorning our feet?  And why to do we feel the need to fill our closet with racks and racks of fabulous foot fashions.

I will tell you why! You never feel fat when you go shopping for shoes. Your feet don't change size (well, unless you are pregnant, of course). So, there isn't that uncomfortable squeezing into a size that you know good and well you haven't been in at least five months. And, you don't have to awkwardly ask the sales person for the next size up, wondering if she is wondering if you busted the seams or tore the zipper in the size down.

So, we stick to shoes on those days that the scale reads a little bit more than we would like it to.  And why shouldn't we.  Even on days when we don't feel fabulous, we still deserve to feel beautiful; even if it is only on our feet.

Psst! Check out my latest foot fashions! I have been working on my black wardrobe capsule.   Stella.jpg    Thumbnail image for Carly.jpg
